Why Ghana? Why DIVOG?

Why Ghana? Why DIVOG?

Volunteering in Ghana with DIVOG combines. . .

Life-Changing Adventure & Sensible Caution

If you want to make a lasting difference somewhere completely foreign and exciting, Ghana is your spot. Poverty, malnutrition, lack of education and disease plague many rural communities throughout Ghana—your time spent volunteering in these villages can transform the lives of the underprivileged. However, you might be surprised that Ghana is a safe, secure and stable destination. The risk of harm to foreigners is minimal: our volunteers feel completely at ease walking around at night. Ghana has held democratic elections for nearly twenty years, and isn’t plagued by internal civil conflict, clan warfare or political insurgency; in Ghana, you can experience Africa without taking any unnecessary risks.

Desire to Drop Off the Grid & Reliable Cell/Internet Access

Cell coverage is affordable and reliable in most parts of Ghana, so if you need to stay in touch with folks back home, wireless internet connections are possible even in most rural communities. However, your friends and family don’t need to know that! If you’d rather drop off the grid for two weeks and let your Vacation Response take over email duties for a while, this is the perfect opportunity.

Cultural Immersion & English-Speaking, Welcoming People

Visiting Ghana can give you a taste of a culture like nothing you’ve experienced back at home. Despite the culture shock, English is the official language! Regional dialects are used along with English, and the DIVOG staff is always happy to help translate when necessary. In rural communities with low English fluency, you’ll find that “You are welcome!” is the most commonly known English phrase; it’s easy to feel at home when each passersby is genuinely glad to welcome you to their homeland. With over nine years of experience hosting international volunteers, DIVOG is familiar with the concerns and questions you’ll have as a first-time visitor to Ghana. Additionally, Founder Richard Yinkah has visited the U.S. on numerous occasions, and Beau & Lissy, co-founders of DIVOG’s partner SEEDS Together, live and work with the DIVOG staff and are always happy to help ease your transition.
